Our Cotton

Close-up of soft, raw white cotton fiber

The only thing that ever touches your baby in a Change diaper is 100% cotton, sustainably grown right here in the U.S. Some of it stays in its natural form with no whitening, and some is gently whitened without any chlorine. Together they make up our own special blend. From there, all that cotton becomes the soft-to-the-touch layers your little one gets to wear, and every diaper is put together here in the U.S., too.

Curious about the rest? Below, we're sharing where our cotton grows, how it becomes a diaper, how we test it, and honest answers to the questions parents ask us most, from organic and GMOs to pesticides and whitening.

Busy changing diapers? Here’s the short version.

  • Where it lives in the diaper: Our cotton makes up the top sheet, the leg cuffs, the front and back ears and the outer cover, so the only thing that ever touches your baby is 100% cotton.
  • Where it grows: Grown right here in the U.S., and every diaper is put together here in the U.S., too.
  • Whitening: First, the cotton is cleaned mechanically. Then, we use our own blend of cotton that stays in its natural form with no whitening and cotton that's gently whitened without any chlorine.
  • How it's made: Our cotton layers are formed through a process called Elevated Air Injection, which uses cotton fiber, recycled water and air, with no additives or solvents along the way.
  • Testing: Every single lot of cotton is quality-control tested before it ever becomes part of your baby’s diaper.

Is the cotton organic?

Our cotton is grown right here in the U.S., and while it isn't certified organic or certified non-GMO, we chose our cotton for a reason that's really close to our hearts: we wanted authentic, real cotton with a beautifully simple processing story, instead of cotton that goes through the traditional water- and chemical-intensive preparation used to purify and whiten conventional absorbent cotton.

What about pesticides?

All cotton farming uses some form of pest control, and that includes organic farming, too. Organic rules limit which substances can be used, but they don't rule them all out.

When it comes to a diaper, the question that really matters is what's left in the cotton that touches your baby. That's why the TruCotton® in every Change diaper is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, Product Class I certified, which is the strictest OEKO-TEX product class and the one designed especially for babies and little ones. It's evaluated against an extensive catalogue of criteria covering more than 1,000 potentially harmful substances, including pesticide residues.

On top of that, every lot of our cotton is quality-control tested before it ever becomes a diaper. We'll be adding our certificate number to this page, along with a link so you can check it out yourself.

Is the cotton bleached?

Our natural cotton is cleaned mechanically, not bleached. While some of our blend is gently whitened, it's never whitened with chlorine. The wood fluff pulp inside the absorbent core is also totally chlorine-free, which means no chlorine compounds were used to whiten it.

How does cotton become a comfy diaper layer?

Our cotton gets turned into the soft, comfy layers of your baby's diaper through a process called Elevated Air Injection, and the best part is how simple it is. This step uses just cotton fiber, recycled water and air, with no additives. Then those finished layers are put together into diapers right here in the U.S.

Where is the cotton grown?

In the United States, sustainably grown on U.S. cotton farms. We'll name the growing region here once our supplier confirms it for the lots used to make our diapers.

What touches baby, and what’s the leg cuff made of?

Only four parts of a Change diaper ever touch your baby's skin: the top sheet, the leg cuffs, the front and back ears and the outer cover, and all four are made of 100% cotton. We chose cotton for everything that touches your little one because it's gentle and breathable, just the way it should be.

The leg cuffs are cotton too, with a thin spandex elastic tucked safely inside where it never touches your baby, so it's the soft cotton that gently hugs your baby's thighs. All together, the elastics and adhesives make up only about 2% of the diaper by weight. If you notice the cuffs gapping or the waist sitting a little high, our Fit Guide shows exactly how a Change diaper should sit.

What’s the core made of?

Nestled inside our cotton is the absorbent heart of the diaper, made of Totally Chlorine Free wood fluff pulp and the world's first and only biodegradable Super Absorbent core, made from polysaccharide, not fossil fuel. It pulls wetness in and away from your baby’s skin. It's all wrapped in corn-based PLA to help keep everything in place.

A soft, water-repelling barrier made of corn-based, biodegradable PLA sits between the heart of the diaper and the outer cover, helping keep wetness right where it belongs without relying on a conventional petroleum-based barrier film, and it never touches your baby.

You can see every single component, along with its share of the diaper by weight, on What's Inside a Change Diaper.

A word from a pediatric dermatologist

In my experience, cotton is the safest fiber for a baby's sensitive skin, and with Change Diapers, nothing but breathable cotton touches your baby.
